Research

Research lies at the core of the Centre for Research and Innovation in Linguistic Education (CIEL), bringing together fundamental and applied perspectives on language, communication and linguistic education. The Centre promotes interdisciplinary research into the relationships between language learning and teaching, multilingualism, culture, cognition, discourse and society, with particular emphasis on connecting theoretical inquiry with educational and professional practice.

CIEL's research profile combines established areas of linguistics and applied linguistics with emerging developments in language education and communication. Particular attention is given to plurilingual and intercultural perspectives, language acquisition and teacher education, discourse and pragmatic competence, translation and mediation, corpus-based approaches, and the transformations brought about by digital technologies and artificial intelligence. Through individual and collaborative research, national and international partnerships, and engagement with educational and professional communities, CIEL seeks to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and to respond to the needs of increasingly multilingual, multicultural and digitally mediated societies.

Research Directions

CIEL's research activities are developed across a broad range of complementary and interdisciplinary areas:

  • Foreign and Second Language Teaching and Teacher Education
Language teaching methodologies, curriculum and materials development, learner-centred approaches, teacher education, professional development and innovative pedagogical practices.
  • Second Language Acquisition and Plurilingualism
Processes of second and additional language acquisition, multilingual competence, learner language, language-learning strategies, interlinguistic transfer and plurilingual practices.
  • Intercultural Pragmatics and Cultural Linguistics
The relationship between language, culture and communication, including intercultural competence, cultural conceptualisations and communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
  • Sociolinguistics and Multilingualism
Language variation and language use in social contexts, linguistic diversity, language attitudes, identity, multilingual communities and language policy.
  • Discourse Analysis, Rhetoric and Pragmatics
Spoken, written and multimodal discourse in academic, educational, professional and public contexts, including pragmatic, rhetorical and socio-pragmatic dimensions of communication.

Meaning construction and interpretation, lexical and semantic relations, figurative language, phraseology and stylistic variation across genres and communicative contexts.
  • Translation, Interpreting and Mediation
Translation and interpreting processes and practices, linguistic and cultural mediation, specialised translation and technology-mediated multilingual communication.
  • Corpus and Computational Linguistics
Corpus-based approaches to language description and analysis, learner and specialised corpora, digital linguistic resources and computational methods applied to linguistic research.
  • Technology-Enhanced Language Learning and Artificial Intelligence
Digital, online and hybrid learning environments, AI-assisted language learning and teaching, generative AI, digital literacy, technology-supported feedback and the pedagogical and ethical implications of emerging technologies.
  • Language Assessment and Certification
Assessment of linguistic, communicative and socio-pragmatic competences, testing practices, assessment literacy, technology-supported assessment and alignment with European frameworks and standards.
  • Intercultural and Professional Communication
Language and communication in professional and institutional environments, with particular emphasis on intercultural business communication, multilingual workplaces and communication across professional cultures.

Research Collaboration and Knowledge Transfer

CIEL encourages collaborative and interdisciplinary research at institutional, national and international levels. Cooperation with universities, research centres, doctoral schools, educational institutions and other academic and professional partners provides opportunities for comparative studies, joint projects, academic mobility, exchange of expertise and the development of international research networks.

An important dimension of the Centre's activity is the connection between research and educational practice. CIEL promotes the involvement of teachers, doctoral candidates, early-career researchers and students in its academic activities and encourages the transfer of research findings into language teaching, teacher education, assessment, educational resources and professional communication. Collaboration with the pre-university educational environment further contributes to strengthening the relationship between academic research and classroom practice.

The Centre also supports the development of research addressing contemporary societal and educational challenges and seeks opportunities for participation in nationally and internationally funded projects, particularly in areas related to linguistic education, multilingualism, intercultural communication, digital transformation and innovative approaches to language learning and teaching.

Research Dissemination and Publications

The dissemination of research and the promotion of international scholarly dialogue are integral components of CIEL's academic mission. The Centre supports the communication and visibility of research findings through academic publications, conference proceedings, edited volumes, collaborative research outputs and participation in national and international scientific events.

Since 2008, CIEL has published the Journal of Linguistic and Intercultural Education (JoLIE), an international, peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to theoretical, empirical and applied research on language, culture and education. JoLIE provides a platform for international scholarly exchange, with particular emphasis on multilingual and intercultural contexts and areas including language education policy, multilingualism and plurilingualism, language learning and teaching, teacher education, intercultural competence and cross-cultural communication.

Through JoLIE, scientific events, publications and national and international academic partnerships, CIEL seeks to increase the visibility and impact of its research, facilitate the circulation of knowledge across institutional and national boundaries, and contribute to the development of international scholarly networks in linguistic and intercultural education.

Scientific Events and Research Exchange

Research dissemination is further supported through the organisation of conferences, workshops, seminars and other academic events that provide opportunities for presenting research findings, discussing emerging approaches and developing new collaborations.

A central component of this activity is the Conference on Linguistic and Intercultural Education (CLIE), which brings together researchers, academics, doctoral candidates and practitioners from Romania and abroad and provides a forum for research and debate on contemporary issues in linguistic and intercultural education.

Through these activities, CIEL seeks to create a sustainable environment for scholarly exchange, encourage the participation of early-career researchers and students, and strengthen the connection between research, education and the wider academic community.
