Vision

Established in 2008 within the Department of Letters, Faculty of History, Philology and Educational Sciences, “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia, the Centre for Research and Innovation in Linguistic Education (CIEL) aims to consolidate its position as an interdisciplinary academic centre dedicated to linguistic education, plurilingualism, intercultural communication and educational innovation.

Building on its experience and academic expertise, CIEL envisages its future development in response to the transformations affecting contemporary education and society, including increasing international mobility, multilingual and multicultural interaction, digitalisation, and the rapid development of artificial intelligence. In this context, the Centre seeks to contribute to an understanding of linguistic education not only as an academic field, but also as an essential component of intercultural dialogue, social inclusion, professional development and active participation in contemporary European society.

National and International Partnerships

A major direction for CIEL's future development will be the consolidation and expansion of partnerships with universities, research centres, doctoral schools, cultural institutes, professional associations, schools and other educational institutions in Romania and abroad.

The Centre aims to become increasingly involved in national and international academic networks, collaborative initiatives and European projects. These partnerships will support academic mobility, exchange of expertise, joint initiatives, scientific events, publications and opportunities for students and early-career researchers.

Particular attention will be given to strengthening cooperation with the pre-university educational environment. Through partnerships with schools and teachers, CIEL seeks to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between academic expertise and educational practice and to contribute to the continuing professional development of language teachers.

The Centre will also remain open to cooperation with cultural organisations, public institutions, civil society and the private sector in areas in which linguistic, communicative and intercultural expertise can respond to concrete educational and professional needs.

Academic Events and Knowledge Exchange

CIEL aims to strengthen its role as a platform for academic dialogue and knowledge exchange by developing a sustainable programme of national and international conferences, symposia, workshops, research seminars, round tables and invited lectures.

The Centre will seek to develop recurring academic events that bring together researchers, teachers, doctoral candidates, students and practitioners from Romania and abroad. Such initiatives will contribute to the exchange of ideas and good practices, the creation of professional and academic networks, and the national and international visibility of CIEL and the University.

Particular attention will be given to opportunities for doctoral candidates, early-career researchers and students to participate in academic events, present their work and interact with established researchers.

Education, Professional Development and Community Engagement

CIEL envisages strengthening its contribution to education and professional development through courses, workshops, training activities and educational initiatives addressed to teachers, students and other groups interested in developing linguistic, communicative and intercultural competences.

The Centre will continue to promote cooperation between higher education and pre-university education and to encourage the involvement of teachers and students in its activities. Extracurricular initiatives will complement academic activities and create opportunities for engagement with current issues in linguistic and intercultural education.

CIEL also aims to strengthen its expertise in language assessment and certification and to explore opportunities for developing institutional capacity in this area in accordance with recognised European principles and frameworks.

Innovation and Digital Development

Innovation will remain an important component of CIEL's future development. The Centre seeks to respond to the opportunities and challenges created by digital technologies and artificial intelligence, particularly as they transform language learning, teaching, communication and assessment.

Digital resources, online and hybrid environments and emerging technologies will increasingly support the Centre's educational activities, international cooperation and dissemination of knowledge. At the same time, CIEL aims to promote a critical, responsible and pedagogically informed approach to the integration of new technologies into linguistic education.

Visibility and European Dimension

CIEL aims to increase its national and international visibility through partnerships, participation in academic networks and projects, scientific and educational events, publications and an enhanced digital presence.

In the medium and long term, the Centre seeks to strengthen its integration into the European academic and educational landscape, while maintaining a strong connection with the needs of its local and national educational communities.

Its future development will continue to be guided by the principles of plurilingualism, linguistic and cultural diversity, intercultural understanding, equal access to language learning and social cohesion, reflecting the European values on which the Centre's original mission was founded.

Future Outlook

CIEL's long-term vision is to develop into a nationally and internationally recognised centre for linguistic education and innovation, connecting academic expertise with educational practice and bringing together researchers, teachers, students and institutional partners from Romania and abroad.

Through international cooperation, strategic partnerships, academic events, educational initiatives and openness to technological and societal change, CIEL aims to create a sustainable environment for knowledge exchange and professional development and to contribute to the advancement of linguistic and intercultural education.

In this way, CIEL seeks to remain locally engaged, nationally relevant and internationally connected, while contributing to the academic mission of the Faculty of History, Philology and Educational Sciences and “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia, as well as to the wider European commitment to plurilingualism, intercultural dialogue and inclusive education.
