About
Presentation
The Centre for Research and Innovation in Linguistic Education - CIEL was set up in December 2007 in order to foster and promote linguistic and intercultural diversity across Romania and Europe.
Our main aim is to carry out fundamental and applied research in the field of linguistic education, with a view to generating new knowledge, both scientific and applied. We fully understand the importance of raising citizens" awareness as to the positive acceptance of linguistic, cultural, religious differences, as well as of increasing their ability to interact and establish relationships with other citizens. Our endeavours are geared towards substantiating and supporting local and national linguistic policies at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
We are strongly committed to the Language Education Policy of the Council of Europe, which promotes:
- plurilingualism (all are entitled to develop a degree of communicative ability in a number of languages over their lifetime in accordance with their needs);
- linguistic diversity (Europe is multilingual and all its languages are equally valuable modes of communication and expressions of identity; the right to use and learn one"s language(s) is protected in Council of Europe"s Conventions);
- mutual understanding (the opportunity to learn other languages is an essential condition for intercultural communication and acceptance of cultural differences);
- democratic citizenship (participation in democratic and social processes in multilingual societies is facilitated by the plurilingual competence of individuals);
- social cohesion (equality of opportunity for personal development, education, employment, mobility, access to information and cultural enrichment depends on access to language learning throughout life).
Student Engagement
CIEL actively encourages student participation in its academic and educational activities, creating opportunities for students to develop their linguistic, intercultural, academic and professional competences beyond the formal curriculum.
The Centre supports the Student Translation Circle for Literary and Specialised Texts (Cercul de traduceri literare şi de texte de specialitate), which provides students with a collaborative environment in which to develop and apply their translation skills across literary and specialised fields. The Circle encourages engagement with authentic texts, reflection on linguistic and cultural mediation, and the development of practical translation competences, while strengthening the connection between academic learning and professional practice.
The Circle is also actively involved in the wider academic and educational life of the Centre, encouraging students to participate in student academic events, workshops, translation and language competitions, study visits and other extracurricular activities. These initiatives provide opportunities for students to exchange ideas, engage with academics and professionals, broaden their intercultural experience and apply their knowledge and skills in contexts beyond the classroom. Through these activities, CIEL seeks to foster student initiative, collaboration and academic engagement, while supporting the development of the next generation of language and communication professionals.
